For many people the holidays are a time of joy and
fun, food and tradition, and family. For most, the
holidays are a mix of those things along with
intense emotions, high expectations, frustration and
idyllic dreams of what we hope our holidays will be
versus how they actually turn out.
We live in a world where families are complicated.
Sometimes when we look at other people’s
scrapbook pages it is easy to think that in their
world everything is perfect and pristine. No kids are
crying, and no adults are wishing they were
somewhere else or missing someone so much that
they feel physical pain.
When you write your own stories, whether they are
holidays or everyday, know that you don’t have to
sugar-coat events or make them into something
that they weren’t. It’s okay to tell the truth. It’s
also okay to not tell the whole story.
Maybe it was a super hard holiday for you. In that
case, my suggestion is to say just that, and then
find something positive to focus on, even in the
midst of a really tough time. Focus on what was
great, what was special and what you were

embrace what is real.
