Circle Punching Techniques

Please join us in welcoming Virginia Nebel back to the blog as this week’s 3 t’s guest designer. In fact, Virginia has graciously offered to share a FABULOUS technique with us on the 2nd Tuesday of each month this year! Dust off your circle punches and take a look at this fun tutorial.

Most of us have one, two or even a few circle punches. Here are a few easy and fun ways to be creative with them. In my examples I use a 2.5 and 1.75 inch punch from Marvy Uchida and EK success. When using punches, I find it easier to turn my punch over so that I can see what I am punching.

1. Make leaves

Punch a circle using the larger punch. With the smaller punch you can punch oval shaped leaves. You can stamp, emboss, or Stickle them for extra dimension.

2. Make a scalloped edge

Lightly mark a straight line with a pencil .75 of an inch from the edge. Position the small circle punch up to this marked line to get even scallops along the edge.

3. Make flower petals

Punch out an almost complete circle (you do not need the actual shape that is punched out). Position your punch onto the negative of the circle left in your paper and punch out slivers. You can usually get 3 to 4 same shaped slivers out of one circle negative before you have to punch out a new circle negative.

Now, check out the layout that I created using the techniques that I just shared:
