We had an opportunity to catch up with owner and designer Caroline Lau from Maya Road in April and was delighted when she shared a little more about herself and about her oh-so-fabulous company Maya Road!
Q. Tell us a little about yourself....
Hi, I am Caroline Lau, one of the partners at Maya Road. I used to work as a Chemical Engineer and even did some interesting things like schedule Natural Gas, buy precious metals, plan production for a business line and forecast Crude Oil in the Chemical Industry. But then I stepped over to my creative business side when I left my job in 2005 to work at Maya Road full time. My hubby, David, also works with me full time at Maya Road. I have 2 little ones - Noah who just turned 5 and Olivia who will be 2 in the Fall. In my spare time I love to cook, run and play soccer. I have also recently rediscovered my love for sewing.
Q. Tell us a little about Maya Road...
My sister, Deb, and I (and our hubbies) started Maya Road in 2003 when we felt like there was a need missing in the industry and the rest is history. Maya Road was founded on a belief in each person's creative ability and on the commitment to making high quality scrapbooking products available and affordable to everyone and we continue to strive for that every day.
Q. Where do you find inspiration for Maya Road...
For those that know us, we believe in the philosophy of a little something for everyone. Our products are very diverse in nature and that truly reflects the many interests that we have. My inspiration comes from my travels, dabbling in all sorts of different crafts and lots of reading. I also find that when I am doing some long runs, I will think of products which we want to make.
Q. What is one of the most popular products in the Maya Road line up...
One of our most popular products has been our classic 4", 6" and 8" binders. Those binders we have had with us since 2005 or so and they continue to be our best sellers for 2 reasons - price and also that you can use them for any occasion.
Q. What is YOUR favourite product Maya Road has ever developed...
I really love the Jonathan alphabet line. The Jonathan alphabets were named for my nephew Jonathan and my son Noah has his own set. They are different in that Noah's set is super skinny (like Noah) and Jonathan's is a bit more sturdier (like Jonathan). I love the simpleness of the Jonathan font.
Q. Can you give us a sneak peek into what we might see from Maya Road in the near future...
As well know as Maya Road is for our chipboard, we are plunging deep into trims and other embellishments too. And I can't say much beyond that BUT you might see some things you haven't seen from us before in 2012. Stay tuned!
